In their first tournament of the season, the Stonehill Club Volleyball team participated in the 2010 NECVL (New England College Volleyball League) "Marty Open" Tournament. With several new players and little time to prepare after just returning from winter break, the team used the tournament as a way to judge what they were doing well, and what they to do to improve. With 24 teams in competition, each team would play four pool games, in order to qualify for the quarterfinal and semifinal playoff rounds.
Going 0-4 in their pool games, Stonehill put up a consistently strong effort against their opponents. After losing their first match in a close game to UNH, (25-16, 25-20) the team was unable to rebound in their second game against URI. Their closest games came against Tufts and Bowdoin, where each game saw the lead changing numerous times. Falling behind early against Tufts, Stonehill battled back but were unable to overcome the deficit. In their final match, Stonehill gave their best showing and fell short, narrowly losing 24-26 26-28. Taking their performance in stride, however, the team looked forward to practicing net points and working on decreasing line faults in their tournament on the weekend of February 8-9 at Assumption College.
The scores from pool play are listed below.
UNH 25-16 25-20 Stonehill
URI 25-12 25-14 Stonehill
