Men's Lacrosse splits weekend games

On the weekend of March 27-28th, Stonehill Men’s Lacrosse played away in two league matches.  Their first game would pit them against Briarcliffe, in a rematch of the ’09 PCL Div II championship game won by Stonehill 4-3.  Dominating possession in the first quarter, Briarcliffe got on the scoreboard early and often, scoring seven goals on fifteen shots, while Stonehill was able to muster a lone goal from Sophomore Conor Green, and would trail by 6 after one quarter.  Settling down in the second quarter, the teams  traded possession and defensive stops as Stonehill would score twice and Briarcliffe three times for a 10-3 advantage at the half.  Entering the fourth quarter trailing 14-3, the offense finally awoke as the purple and black would score on 5 of 6 shots in the period to try and make it a game.  Every time a run would be made however the team from Long Island would have an answer, and the final score would be an 18-9 loss for the Hill.  Green would finish the day with 4 goals and senior Colin Lancey would chip in with 3 as the lone offensive bright spots, while freshman goalie Michael Phillips would stop 18 shots in net for Stonehill who’s record would drop to 2-2 (1-1) on the season.


                On the second day of thethe weekend road trip, Stonehill would  battle the University of New Haven in Connecticut.  Starting the game just the way they had hoped, Stonehill would open with goals  from Seniors Dan Cermack, and  Colin Lancey in the first quarter, while limiting New Haven to just two shots in the opening frame.  Each team would trade goals in the second quarter, and the Boys from the Hill would enter the halftime break up 3-1, soundly outshooting the chargers 21-3 in the first 30 minutes.  Sophomore goalkeeper Robert Mostertz would shine in the first half with four sparkling saves in the goal. The second half would see Stonehill finally pull away, as they would score four goals in the third quarter, and an additional five goals in the fourth while limiting New Haven to just one marker in the entire second half.  Freshman Anthony Powers had a huge game for Stonehill with 3 goals and 5 assists in the victory as the Purple and Black would push their record to 3-2 (2-1) on the season
