Beavers outlast Team Gino in overtime; Team Dedwards routs Shockers, to settle Mens DI and DII Floor Hockey championships
Team Dedwards (DII Champions)
In the Men’s DII championship, captain Josh Andrews and his Team Dedwards, recovered from a 1-0 first period deficit to rout the Shockers 6-1 last night at the Ames Sports Complex. Jeff Day got the Shockers on the board in the first, knocking a rebound out of mid air past the sprawling Team Dedwards goaltender. Sean Lynch would even the score early in the second, firing home a slapshot from the point on the power play. Another shot from the point, this time from Ben Irzyk would put Team Dewards up for good, and Ryan Hess would make it 3-1 with a wrister from the slot after a nice pass from Pat Fulleuton. Fuelleton would pott one of his own early in the third, on a feed from Hess and the onslaught was on. Hess would score again minutes later, roofing a shot over the goalies outstretched arms, and Andrews would finish off the scoring late in third, tapping in a rebound in front of the goal, for the final margin of victory.
The night’s second championship game was another unbelievable DI contest that would once again end in overtime. Steve Zanetti walked in on the power play and fired a shot over goalie Kevin Diamond’s glove hand for the winner, 4 minutes into the extra session, as the Beavers were crowned champions 3-2 in the Ames Sports Complex.
Mike Manna would put the Beavers on the board in the first period with a short-handed goal. Stealing the ball from the defenseman, Manna would break in alone on Diamond, and score with a shot to the top corner. In the second, Fred Massotta leveled the game 1-1 with a one timer from the slot off a nice feed from Brian Sullivan. Still in the second, the Beavers jumped back in front as Mike Cooke picked a rebound out of mid air and slammed it past the goaltender for the one goal lead. Massotta would knot the game up three minutes later with a shot to the top corner over Beavers goaltender Derek Chapdelaine. Neither team would be able to produce a winner in the third period, as Chapdelaine and Diamond would repeatedly turn away scoring threats with timely saves. Two minutes into the overtime Diamond made the save of the game, robbing the Beavers from point blank range, but just one minute later Zanetti turned in his heroics with an unstoppable blast from the top of the slot.
