Women's Ultimate Disc crowned champions of Hofstra Tournament
The Stonehill Women’s Ultimate Disc team entered the Hofstra tournament off some pretty inspired early season play. Coming into the weekend they were seeded fifth in the tournament, but looked to make a statement early. The opening match was against Lehigh and although the ladies came out flat, turning the ball over 6 times in the game’s opening minutes, they were still able reach the half up 8-1. Sophomore Maggie Carmona would lead the way with 5 scores, as the ladies would finish of Lehigh, 13-4. Match number two against Rutgers was eerily similar as Stonehill would jump out to an 8-2 halftime lead and once again cruise to a victory, this time 15-5. Senior handlers Kerri Caufield and Lauren McNamara each had 5 assists apiece in the victory, while sophomores Emily Nicotera and Nicolette Degrassi scored 3 times each.
The third game would pit the ladies against fellow unbeaten and 2-0 team Georgetown University. Stonehill quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but GU was able to respond, and at the break the ladies trailed 8-6. The second half was an amazing back and forth affair as the match would be tied at 9, 10 and 11, before GU was able to score the final two points for a 13-11 victory and first loss of the tournament for the purple and black. Senior McNamara continued her stellar play as she ended the game with 7 assists, 2 scores and 2 defenses. Hofstra would be next up for the ladies and they would quickly get back on the winning track, dominating the tournament hosts 15-3, as Nicotera would score 4 points in the victory. The Final pool match for the 3-1 ladies would be against the College of NJ. Jumping out to an 8-2 lead a t the break, the ladies would watch their opponents creep back into the game, before finishing them off 11-6. Sophomore Kate Twombly was steady for the victors as she recovered 3 scores and 2 D blocks.
On Sunday the Ladies would find themselves in the semi-finals, in a re-match against tournament hosts Hofstra. As in their first meeting, Stonehill would clearly show it’s superiority in the first half, as they jumped out to an 8-1 lead, en route to gliding to a 10-1 victory, setting up a showdown between themselves and Georgetown in the Final. With revenge on their minds and the championship in their sights, the ladies would not be denied. A 7-0 run to start the game completely put GU on their back heels, with the ladies cruising into half up 8-1. Georgetown would try repeatedly to cut into the lead in the second time, but each time was turned away. The final score would be 15-5 as the ladies would run away with a well deserved championship. McNamara was dominant in the final recording a whopping 9 assists, 2 scores, and 4 D blocks while Twombly chipped in with 7 huge scores and 2 D blocks.
