Men's Rugby beats Roger Williams 22-8
The Men's Rugby team took to the field on Saturday, October 10,
against an experienced and at times, aggressive Roger Williams
side. Stonehill (2-1) has had a good season thus far,
and looked to build upon their success. While both teams
struggled in the first half to find a rhythm, they kept with the
team from Rhode Island, and were tied in the early going at three
points apiece. Just three minutes into the game, Stonehill
received a penalty kick which was converted by Senior Fly Half Paul
Sawyer. After some very physical play and the
distribution of some yellow cards by the official, both teams
settled down and found their game. The Hill Men were able to
put up a balanced attack that featured great recycling and forward
movement up-field. Their balanced offense between the
forwards and backs enabled them to attack Roger Williams' "pack"
offense which limited their scoring opportunities and was more
defensive. As the teams went back and forth on their runs,
Stonehill broke through for a try in the 30th by Paul
Sawyer. However, they were matched by Roger Williams' just
minutes later, making the halftime score an 8-8 tie, with each team
making a penalty kick and one unconverted try.
Stonehill came out ready, after an inspired halftime speech by Head
Coach Derek Jenesky, and put up two converted tries within a
stretch of just seven minutes as junior Ryan Maynes and sophomore
Aaron Routses were both able to inch their way over the try line in
the 55th and 62nd minutes. With the
score suddenly 22-8, Roger Williams became frustrated and their
play was a clear indication of that. Match Official John
Fiore stated, "After Stonehill's two scores, the lack of discipline
on the RW sideline started to show itself on the field. One of
their players was yellow carded for stomping a Stonehill
player in the 63rd minute. Rather than play rugby to
the end, RW rugby discipline deteriorated. Penalties increased as
did aggression." In the 78th minute the Roger
Williams Captain was sent off the pitch after he sent an extended
forearm into the jaw of a Stonehill tackler. Despite the
rough play to end the game, Stonehill came out victorious and
celebrated their 22-8 victory. Junior Alex Swayne stated,
"The team banded together in the second half and showed
potential. Today's success is a good sign toward the rest of
the season".
