#12 Women’s Rugby starts strong in opening victory over Providence College

On a beautiful Saturday morning in front of a large home crowd the women’s rugby team continued their home dominance with a resounding 46-0 victory over Providence College.  Senior wing Cassie Peterson got the 2010 campaign started by scoring in the 8th minute off of a nice forwards phase, which led to an overload for the backs on the outside.  Senior Laura Fischer converted to put the ladies up 7-0.  Fischer would touch down two times herself in the next ten minutes, and after fellow Senior Katie O’Malley converted the second score, the lead had grown to 19-0.   Junior Emily Helming would find the try-zone minutes later, followed by Senior Ashley George on a long break.  O’Malley would convert the George score for a 31-0 lead with five minutes left in the half.  Junior Taryn Blume would dive across the line for the final score of the half, with the ladies taking a commanding 36-0 lead into the break.

Providence came out determined not to give up in the second half, battling hard for the final forty, but George sliced through the their defense once  more for a score with 20 minutes remaining.  Senior Deborah Caruso would sneak left off a wheeled scrum, touching down in the corner for a the final points of the afternoon, and the ladies would have their opening game victory, and their five year home winning streak intact.  The only bad news on the day was starting Lock Lizzy Driscoll was lost for the season with a broken clavicle on the final play of the game.  “I thought we played very well for the opening match of the season,” commented Coach Derek Jenesky, “We know we have a lot of work ahead of us, but we have been preaching team and togetherness these first few weeks, and it was certainly on display on Saturday.”

The ladies next take on Boston College, Friday night September 24th at 7:00pm, out on the Rec Fields.
