Women’s Ultimate Home Tournament Recap

The Stonehill Women’s Ultimate Disc team hosted thirteen teams this past weekend in the 4th annual Get Skyy’ed Invitational Tournament.  In their first and possibly most exciting game of the tournament, Stonehill took on an experienced MIT team.  With considerable wind and light rain, conditions were less than favorable at the start of play.  Trailing early in the first half, Stonehill scored twice to lessen the deficit, but found themselves down to MIT by a score of 7-4 at halftime.  Senior Co-Captain Maggie Carmona urged her teammates to continue to “play their game”, stressing that they not worry about the little things, but return to the basics.  Her words helped inspire a huge second half comeback that saw Co-Captain Kate Twombly score four consecutive times for Stonehill.  Grace Walcowicz led the team with six assists in the game.   Freshman Abby Barnicle came up with two outstanding scoring plays, diving for the disc on one and jumping over a Smith player for another, as Stonehill regained the lead.  Stonehill had come all the way back and finished strongly with the final score of 11-8.
Carrying the momentum with them following their comeback victory, Stonehill recorded three consecutive shutouts against Holy Cross (13-0), Smith College (13-0), and Wellesley College (13-0).  Cruising straight to the final, Stonehill took on Boston College and after a strong start at 3-1, they wrapped up the tournament victory by a final score of 7-2.  Playing well in the win were Seniors Rosie Kelly and Emily Nicotera who helped guide the team’s offense with precision passing and reliable hands.
This tournament marked the second tournament overall victory for the team this fall and it was the first time they won their own Get Skyy’ed Tournament in its four year history. Following their Championship win, Coach Jimmy Doucette said of the team, “I could not be more proud of this team.  They grow on a weekly basis, on and off the field.  This is a very good team and we should expect a lot out of them this season.”
