Women’s Rugby Second Half Rally Falls Short in Spring Opener
Playing a combined team from UMASS-Lowell and UNH, the Women’s Rugby Team dropped their opening game of the Spring 20-17 Saturday on the Rec Fields.
The visitor’s opened the scoring in the 6th minute with an unconverted try in the corner. The lead jumped to 10-0 and then 15-0 with tries in the 23rd and 28th minute of the first half. Trailing 15-0 the ladies went into the half knowing they were behind, but not trailing by an insurmountable amount.
In the 55th minute the visitor’s scored their final try of the match and this seemed to awake the Ladies. Sophomore Brooke Lessard finally got Stonehill on the board with an unconverted try in the 65th minute. With some momentum on their side, Lessard provided another spark, breaking down the left sideline to cut the deficit in half at 20-10. Freshman Sarah Buonopane broke free with 5 minutes remaining, converting her own try and the ladies trailed 20-17 in the final moments. Two great chances on the outside were thwarted by mistakes as the final whistle blew ending the game.
“We have a very young team at the moment,” Coach Derek Jenesky added, “We are taking our time as we find out what players work in what positions. It is a work and progress and we will get better every week with our eyes towards challenging next fall.”
