PURPOSE

Having the opportunity to participate in both formal and informal recreational outlets is a vital part of everyday life. The Intramural Sports Program at Stonehill College seeks to provide formal recreational sports opportunities to all students, faculty, and staff by:

  • Offering an opportunity for interesting and rewarding competition while including men's, women's, and co-recreational sports. Presenting a varied and diverse program of sports and recreational activities so that the entire campus community has the opportunity to participate regardless of athletic ability or preference.

  • Attempting, whenever possible, to expand current facilities and to accommodate the recreational wishes or needs of the majority of students.

LEVELS OF COMPETITION

In some leagues and individual tournaments, competition is divided into ability levels such as beginner, intermediate, and advanced. When this system is used, individuals must responsibly choose their own level, based on their self-evaluation of ability and type of competition they desire.

  • Level 1 = Top Competition
  • Level 2 = Lesser Competition

It may be necessary to combine class levels in the case of limited entries.

The goal of this system is to have players seek the highest level of their ability so that players of lesser skill can and will compete and, in doing so, enjoy some measure of success at that level. Beginning players are welcome and encouraged to participate in intramural tournaments.

ENTRY FORMS/ROSTERS

Team rosters, individual and dual entries must be submitted on official Intramural entry blanks. These forms are available at the Captains' meetings for that sport or at the Control Desk - if no meeting is held. Sports and deadlines are listed on the Intramural Sports Calendar. New players may be added to a roster at any time. This is done by adding the person's name to a scorecard and it will automatically be transferred on to the roster by intramural personnel. A player is not officially on a roster until his/her name appears on a game sheet. NOTE: To be eligible to participate in playoff competition, a player must have played in at least 1/3 of the team's contests during the regular season. Fractions will be rounded accordingly. In cases of an organization having several teams in one sport, the personnel of each must remain stable.

Contestants shall not represent more than one team in any given sport. When a person's name appears on a scorecard, he/she is considered to have played in that contest. EXCEPTION: A contestant may play in the Co-Rec division and in one of the other divisions in which he/she is eligible to participate.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Hill Rec Sports cannot assume responsibility for the eligibility of players, but will assist team managers and individuals with their problems or eligibility and interpretation of rules prior to competition.
  • All Stonehill full and part-time students, faculty, and staff shall be eligible to compete in intramural sports, except as otherwise provided in the rules.
  • Any individual is eligible to participate in intramural programs if he/she is not under disciplinary penalty prohibiting participation and if he/she meets the requirements of intramural rules.
  • In some cases, current members of intercollegiate teams may be ineligible for an intramural team. The active squad roster after the final cut or the date of the first contest, whichever occurs first, shall be used to determine intramural eligibility.
  • Any person who works out with a squad and/or retains his/her locker and team equipment (red shirts) may be considered ineligible for the entire intramural season in that particular applicable sport.
  • In most cases, members of intercollegiate teams may participate in their corresponding sport on a restricted basis. The restrictions are:
    • No more than two athletes (exceptions will be noted on individual Sport Info sheets) falling into the above categories may be on any intramural roster during the course of the season
    • When applicable, these athletes must participate on teams that are in the highest skill level for that sport.
    • Squad members who have dropped from the squad list and who are no longer playing or practicing with the team may also participate in intramurals on a restricted basis. One such individual can be on any intramural team roster as long as that team is in the highest skill level classification in that sport.

RULES OF CONDUCT

"Intramural sports is not serious business"

Intramural Sports competition is for the enjoyment of all its participants. As part of its objectives, it should be providing a healthy outlet for the release of one's energies and competitive urges. Secondly, it should provide a social outlet for the participant, while also being fun. Don't ruin this atmosphere by being a poor sport. Inappropriate conduct (including, but not limited to the abuse of referees, unnecessary roughness, fighting, profanity, etc.) may result in the immediate forfeiture of the contest, suspension of the student from further participation in the Recreational Sports Program, and/or referral of the students to the proper campus authorities.

Players removed from any intramural contest by an official or supervisor for any reason are suspended from all intramural activity and must personally seek reinstatement from the Intramural Director before they may participate again. Any player using an assumed name or signing no name at all on the scorecard shall be barred from all intramural competition for the rest of the semester in which the offense occurred and for the semester following, subject to the discretion of the Intramural Director. The team for which they played will be dropped from further competition in that sport.

Anyone who plays for two teams shall be ineligible for all intramural sports for the remainder of the year and the second team for which they played shall be dropped from further competition in that sport (EXCEPTION: See section on Entry Forms and Rosters for Co-Rec Participation).

TEAM CAPTAIN/MANAGER'S DUTIES

  • All teams are responsible for knowing all general rules and regulations pertaining to intramurals. These can be found in the Rec. Sports Handbook, which is distributed in September and is also available at the Control Desk by request.

  • All teams are responsible for knowing the rules of the particular sport.

  • There are no protests. Any and all disputes must be settled on the sport by the team captains and supervisor in charge.

  • Teams are encouraged to have their own matching uniforms with numbers. However, game jerseys may be checked out at the Control Desk immediately before each game and must be returned immediately after the game. The team captain should do this by leaving his/her Stonehill I.D. at the Desk. A charge of $10.00 will be assessed for each jersey not returned and the team will be dropped from further intramural competition until the jersey(s) is/are returned.

  • All managers must have complete information on entry forms (name/address/phone number and signature at the bottom).

  • All team managers/captains must know postponement and cancellation procedures:

  •
    • If school is cancelled, or there is a problem with inclement weather, call Hill Rec Sports after 3:00 p.m. for a determination on Intramurals.

  •
    • If for any reason a game is cancelled, teams are responsible to check the intramural board in the Field House foyer for the rescheduled date and time. We will attempt to call you with this information.

  • Teams wishing to reschedule games must obtain permission from the Director, and if O.K.'d must use the following procedure:

  •
    • Find a desirable date and time to play within already scheduled games.

  •
    • Contact captains of teams which are already scheduled in the desired date and time, as well as the captain of the opposing teams.

  •
    • If all three team captains agree to this switch, they must individually notify the Director, after which the game may be rescheduled.

  •
    • Any confusion or mix ups will be the responsibility of the team wishing to change and will likely result in forfeit by that team.

  • Anyone calling Hill Rec Sports for information or with questions regarding intramurals should ask for the Assistant Director or a statistician. Unless these people are spoken to, we will not be held responsible for misinformation.

  • To be responsible for knowing all rules and regulations printed herein and in individual sport rules sheets, or covered at captain/manger's meetings.

  • To be responsible for maintaining contact with the Hill Rec Sports Office in regard to entries, league and playoff.

  • To pick up sport schedules and distribute them to team members. Be sure to remind teams as to place, date, and time of all contests, including any rescheduled games.

TIE BREAKER PROCEDURE

  1. If two or more teams in the league finish with identical win/loss records, the following tie breaker procedures will be used to determine final standings and potential playoff slots, unless otherwise noted for a particular sport.
  2. Two-way tie: the results of the contest between the two teams during regular league play will be used to break the tie.
  3. Three or more: point differential using the games played between those teams involved will be used to break the tie. Once the tie is broken down to two teams then head to head competition will be the determining factor for the final team if need be.
  4. In cases of either tiebreaker #2 or #3 resulting in a tie, the least goals/points allowed for the season will be the determining factor.

CODE OF CONDUCT

All members are expected to adhere to college (see your Hillbook), and SGA standards and guidelines (See your Hillbook). As noted in the Community Standards (see your Hillbook) Rec Sports may invoke independent actions upon violations.

LIGHTNING PROCEDURE

Hill Rec Sports reserves the right to halt any and all intramural activities in the event of lightning. The game will be stopped when there is a 30 second "flash to bang" (thunder) time. At 30 seconds "flash to bang" the lightning strike is 6 miles away. The game(s) should be stopped earlier if there are extraordinary circumstances regarding getting everyone to safe shelter. Safe shelter is defined as a solid building with plumbing and electricity, or, secondarily, motor vehicles with metal roofs and the windows rolled up. Hill Rec Sports suggests that participants and spectators go to the closest available buildings (Holy Cross Center or College Center. Activities will only resume if the Intramural Director or supervisor in charge deems it safe to continue, and this must only be a minimum of 30 minutes after the lightning flash or the last sound of thunder has been seen or heard. For safety sake, there is a good possibility that the activities will be halted for the day, and resumed at a later date.

Notice: Hill Rec Sports strongly advises obtaining medical clearance to anyone participating in any form of exercise program. You are advised NOT to work out or participate if ill or injured.
