Saturday the Men’s Rugby Team headed to Colchester, Vt. to take on conference foe St. Mikes in a league match which had carried over from the fall season. With a lot of new faces in new positions and roles, the team knew they would have a tough struggle at St. Mikes. Playing with passion and energy the undermanned team hung on losing 22-7. “I couldn’t have been more proud of this team,” added Head Coach Derek Jenesky after the game, “We are low on numbers but not heart. We came up here with no seniors and only a few Juniors and played our hearts out.”
The first half was a back and forth affair as Stonehill defended their end ferociously, limiting the Home team only one try. Unable to put any major sustained pressure on, they would go into the half trailing only 5-0. St. Mikes came out in the first twenty of the second stanza and was able to find holes, exploiting Stonehill on the outside, scoring three treis to push the score to 22-0. The final twenty was a different story however as The Hill rallied, maintaining most of the ball possession. This would pay off as Sophomore Nick Germaine punched through the defense for a try in the waning minutes. Junior Pete Sullivan converted for the 22-7 final.
The men finish their Spring schedule next Friday 4/27 at home against Babson. The kick-off time is 7:00pm on the Rugby Field.
