Men's Lacrosse set to defend 1st PCLL title in school history
Led by Senior captains, Colin Lancey (Attackman), Ben Hyder ( Defenseman), Thomas Higgins (Midfielder) and Head Coach Ryan Larkin, the Stonehill Men's Lacrosse team will look to defend their PCLL DII title in 2010 and return to the National tournament.
On offense Larkin returns Lancey, whose quickness and outstanding inside finishing has helped him lead the team and league in scoring for in '08 and ‘09, was named League MVP his sophomore year and has been 1st team all league the past 2 years. He's consistently playing the other team's best defender and still manages to lead the league in scoring.
Junior Matthew Colletti , one of the team's top scorers last year possesses a great outside shot as well as quick hands inside. He's looks to have a big season and improve upon his honorable mention attack in '08 and ‘09.
Junior Connor Green '11 was second team all league his freshman year and is the best shooter on the team. He's the backbone of the transition game and Stonehill's best returning faceoff middie.
On the Defensive side of the ball, Hyder will have to lead the way on a young inexperienced backline that was ravaged by graduation. Freshman standout Charlie McDonald will look to make an immediate impact for Larkin's troops along with Junior Will Bozek and sophomore Jordan Medeiros.
In net the talented junior backstop Robert Edwards returns for his 3rd year, while Freshman Mike Phillips and Rob Mostertz will be vying for time as well after impressive fall seasons.
The Hill's stiffest league competition this year will come from Briarcliffe, who Stonehill defeated by one goal in the waning moments of last year's championship game, and who graduated zero seniors. Waiting in the wings will also be WPI, a strong team last year, who graduated only 2 player and Coast Guard who Larkin believes will surprise many teams this year and make a run at the championship as well.
"Last year we had a very successful year, winning our league and making it to the national tournament for the first time in school history" spoke and excited Larkin, " We graduated 13 seniors who were all very crucial to that success. This year the coaching staff has been impressed with some of the new talent that has come in and plan on defending our crown and making it back to Denver. We are going to have to work hard and learn quick but it can definitely be done."
