Josh Hickey Wins NCCGA Northern New England Regional Tournament

By Cory Connolly

(April 5th & 6th) - This past weekend, the Stonehill Golf Team took part in the NCCGA Northern New England Regional Tournament. The yearly tournament featured a field of highly competitive teams from local New England colleges and universities, including the University of New Hampshire, Northeastern University, Boston University, Merrimack College, Bentley University, UMass Amherst, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Fisher College, and UMass Boston.

The teams faced off at the Meadow at Peabody (located in Peabody, Massachusetts), a 6,215-yard, par 71 course. In total, 52 players completed the 36-hole tournament, with only 11 players shooting below 80 all weekend.

The 1st round took place on Saturday and included very poor conditions. The temperature never made it past 45 degrees, while winds were consistently blowing in excess of 20-25 mph. Due to the weather, many players were unable to finish the round on Saturday and had to wrap up the round the next day.

Despite all of this, Stonehill still got off to a great start. By the end of the 1st round, Josh Hickey sat in 1st place with a two shot lead (shooting a 76). Meanwhile, Adam Marcoulier was in a tie for 7th (shooting a 81) and Andrew Hunt was in 13th (shooting a 85).

On the following day, play continued with the 2nd round. Although it was still cold and breezy, the weather improved slightly, hovering in the low 50s for most of the day.

Hickey, who was competing in his first ever collegiate tournament, continued his strong play from the previous day, shooting yet another 76. Thanks to his clutch putting and accurate driving, he was able to win the tournament by 4 shots over CJ Konkowski of UNH.

His teammate Adam Marcoulier went on to finish alone in 7th after shooting a 79 in the 2nd round, while Andrew Hunt finished in 16th after shooting an 89. While Stonehill was not eligible for the team competition that was won by UNH, they were extremely happy with the tremendous success of Hickey and the strong play shown by the rest of the team.
