#9 Ranked Women’s Rugby begins Nationals Preparation in dominating Fashion with Alumni Day win over Wheaton
With three tune up games before their DII Sweet 16 appearance in Kissimmee, Florida, it was important for the Women’s Rugby Team to get off on the right foot, and that’s exactly what they did. Scoring early and often against a beleaguered Wheaton side the Women rolled to a 90-5 victory on their home field in front of a large Alumni Day crowd.
Senior co-captain Ashley George led the try scoring barrage with 5 tries on the day. George, Junior Fiona Lunney, Senior Katie O’Malley and Junior Taryn Blume all scored tries in the first ten minutes as the ladies rolled out to a 26-0 lead in the game’s opening moments. Senior Laura Fischer added 29 points on the day with 3 tries scored and 7 conversions. Seniors Brit Roy, Deborah Caruso, Olivia Gorab and Sophomore Lisa DeGuglielmo all added tries of their own as the women recorded their highest point total in years. “It’s tough,” commented Head Coach Derek Jenesky after t he game, “You never like scoring that many points in a game. With only three tune-up games before nationals it was imperative that the starters got game minutes, so the score got out of hand. Wheaton played tough hard nose rugby all the way to the final whistle and should be commended for their heart.”
The women next take to the field on at home, Saturday 4/2 at 11am against UMASS-Amherst
